Lost amidst the deserts of Northern Chad, disaffected American journalist David Locke (Jack Nicholson) stumbles across the dead body of a fellow hotel acquaintance and decides to leave behind more than his sand trapped Land Rover: swapping passports, Locke abandons his identity. Renting a car “for the rest of my life” and embarking on a journey through Germany, England, and Spain, Locke soon discovers that the life he traded in for has direct connections to secret proxy wars and the international arms trade. Accompanied by a young tourist he meets in Barcelona (Maria Schneider), Locke drives further away from himself and the world while being pursued by mysterious criminals and police alike. A maestro of cinematic alienation, Michelangelo Antonioni navigates the slippery nature of identity with impeccable formal control accompanied by a career high point from Jack Nicholson.
