A picaresque road poem, Wagon Master remained a personal favorite of John Ford’s amongst his own pictures and one of three that “came closest to being what I wanted to achieve.” Nearly plotless with an emphasis on grace notes, this relaxed film charts the journey of two horse traders with a shared yen for adventure who are hired by Elder Wiggs (Ward Bond) to lead a Mormon wagon train through southeastern Utah. Along the way they encounter a theater troupe, sex workers, lawmen, Indigenous peoples, and ornery outlaws on the run, all of whom find themselves brought in as members of the traveling community through what Harvard Film Archive calls an “almost musical combination, separation and recombination.” Deceptively simple and elegant in construction, Ford shot this lyrical and visually rapturous film away from his usual commanding landscapes of Monument Valley, instead emphasizing the beauty of a multicultural motley crew of outcasts on the dusty trail.
