Come on down to Trashtown, U.S.A., where the suckers get sucked and the piss players get pissed on. The first feature film from writer-director-star Annapurna Sriram, Fucktoys goes on a sex worker’s odyssey through a glow stick-drenched alternate reality spawned out of John Waters’ trash and the heterosexual films of Gregg Araki. Amidst a mental spiral due to her tooth falling out, AP consults her psychic (a perfectly cast Big Freedia you already know) who explains that a nasty black magic curse has been placed upon her, and to break it, she’ll need to sacrifice a lamb and pay $1,000. With her nonbinary comrade-in-hijinx Danni (Sadie Scott) in tow, the pair journey far and wide on a quest to round up some cash and break the curse.
With rich 16mm footage, bisexual lighting for days, and sexy fits worth envying (that white lacy sock and heel combo?), every detail in every frame has been considered and curated. As AP, Sriram brings a magnetic charm that makes it impossible not to root for her. In her strikingly confident directorial debut, Sriram crafts a fever dream injected with kink and rompery at every turn and proves she’s a star worth watching both in front of and behind the camera.
