Cinema DNA: La La Land and the Color Line
Damien Chazelle's La La Land celebrates the Classic Hollywood Musical, and at the same time plays into its tropes. Join Randa Tawil as we discuss the legacies of the female starlets, white male artists, and the erasure of black performance in La La Land and beyond.
October 12, 2019
Damien Chazelle's La La Land follows two artists in LA as they navigate their careers and passions for performance. The winner of five Academy Awards including Best Director, La La Land is regarded as a love letter to Hollywood musicals, presenting a new story of love, ambition, and fame within the aesthetics of the classic musical. We will explore the history of classic Hollywood musicals, especially within the context of the "color line;" the politics and culture of racial segregation and its legacies.
