Tacoma-based director Zach Weintraub (Bummer Summer, The International Sign for Choking) writes, directs, and stars in his fifth feature film, Assets & Liabilities. Weintraub's fictional counterpart, also named Zach, is a middle-aged suburban dad who is equally burnt out from his corporate job and potty-training his incorrigible toddler. Luckily, Zach has the perfect plan for his rare day alone, one that involves smoking a joint from his secret weed stash and reliving his glory days at the neighborhood skate park.
While attempting a kickflip at the park, Zach befriends a laid-back skater kid who reminds him of his younger self, and who mistakes Zach for someone younger, too ("Wait, how old are you?"). From there, Zach's perfect mental health day spirals into a perfect nightmare, as a series of freaky supernatural occurrences makes him suspect that he and the skater kid are cosmically linked. A mumblecore indie with a dash of the surreal, Assets & Liabilities mines the ennui of middle age for pitch-perfect comedy. Shot in Tacoma and Olympia and suffused with Pacific Northwest cool, Assets & Liabilities is a lo-fi delight, an offbeat comedy about what happens when the best of intentions go hopelessly awry.
