Lati is a first-generation Malian young woman living in Barcelona with her mom, helping to take care of her younger sister, and reluctantly studying in a dental hygiene program. Their dad passed and was buried in a non-Muslim part of the cemetery and now the family abroad presses to have the body moved to Mali for a proper burial. Lati only dreams of becoming a famous rapper and begins training secretly with Judy, a former freestyle competitor. Determined to overcome her father’s death and her fears of performing, and to confront her Muslim mom’s opposition, a new world opens up for her when she learns how to tap into her frustration and anger to create empowering and liberating rhymes. Real-life rapper Latifa Drame, an Afro-descendant and Muslim actress/musician, and Judith Álvarez (Judy), a young actress-musician, both make their film debuts together opposite seasoned actress Asaari Bibang (Lati’s mom), making a formidable ensemble in screenwriter and director Ingride Santos’ debut feature film. Beef (Ruido) offers an immersive and emotionally charged social drama that conveys the reality of a generation of young African migrants who must reconcile their uprooting and their heritage while desperately searching for their own identity.
