Writer-director Avalon Fast's Camp is a dreamy, slow-burn entry into her self-described genre of "girl horror" where grief, witchcraft, and friendship converge into something powerful.
Haunted by two tragedies she can't outrun, Emily (Zola Grimmer) escapes to a Christian summer camp in the woods, hoping for a fresh start. What she finds instead is a tight-knit circle of counselors who drink, party, and may or may not be practicing witches. Emily isn't afraid. For the first time in a long time, she feels like she belongs.
Cinematographer Eily Sprungman shoots Camp like a half-remembered dream, with a quality that mirrors Emily's fractured inner world. Fast intercuts present-day scenes with grainy, 8mm-style memory fragments that cut into the present without warning. The score pulses with ethereal synths, and the witchcraft unfolds through small moments of magic.
Fast lets her characters act and heal on their own terms. Camp is a cathartic experience about girls who refuse to be victims—tender yet angry, full of joy, and impossible to shake.
