After saying farewell to their college-bound daughter, Jessica (Judy Greer) and Ron (Sean Astin), visit their favorite fast-food joint, Blake Junior's, to drown their empty-nester sorrows. As they contemplate their precarious midlife financial situation, Jessica takes a bite of chili and is horrified to discover an unasked-for side dish: a severed human finger. In the ensuing chaos, a quick settlement from the restaurant is offered, then significantly raised. But before money is exchanged, gears begin to grind in everyone's minds. Jessica, a small-town lawyer, begins thinking of ways to raise the stakes in their favor. At the same time, the chain's namesake founder, Blake Junior (John Goodman), sets off on a crusade to prove the wayward digit discovery is a sham, hiring his ex-Marine buddy Dave (a hilariously militarized Bryan Cranston) to crack some heads. Not to be forgotten is the nine-fingered factory worker that allegedly set everything in motion, who also shows up looking for his pound of flesh. Young directors Edd Benda and Stephen Helstad have fun expanding the true-life story over which this farcical film is very loosely draped, leavening every violent plot twist with a Coen-esque sprinkling of comic ineptitude and surprising warmth.
