Sitti, a formidable old woman, is on a pilgrimage to Mecca with her two rebellious granddaughters, 18-year-old Sarah, and 12-year-old Janna. But when their bus stops so the passengers can disembark to pray, Sarah seizes the opportunity to disappear into the crowd. Sitti and Janna abandon the pilgrimage to go in search of Sarah, hoping to find her before the girls' father learns that she is missing.
When they spot a young man with a truck (cheerfully selling fake holy water to the pilgrims), they hire him to take them to Jeddah. There they seek out Aunt Laila, who, having left her husband, has set up shop as a hairdresser. An outcast in her family, she is also a natural confidante for Sarah, who has run away in the hope of fleeing the country with her boyfriend.
As Sitti and Janna follow Sarah's trail, they find themselves on a very different journey than the one they started out on, but one no less meaningful and ultimately transformative for them all.
