Mexican visual artist Efraín Mojica grew up in Penjamillo, Michoacán, where he attended jaripeos—traditional rural celebrations centered on riding a fighting bull without a saddle. Unlike American rodeos, jaripeos have no time limit and are experienced as vibrant community gatherings. Traditional Mexican bands provide music, and the events—often held at Christmas—bring together entire families and generations. Few activities in Mexican culture are considered more traditionally masculine than bull riding. In Jaripeo, Mojica guides viewers into this world, where music, alcohol, and festive energy mingle with subtle glances and flirtations. Through intimate conversations with friends—such as Noah, muscular and drawn to similarly masculine men, and Joseph, a very femme makeup artist—the film explores queer desire within a hypermasculine environment. Mojica gradually emerges as a subject himself, sharing his own story. Together with co-director Rebecca Zweig, he blends cinéma vérité with Super 8 imagery, capturing riders, charros, dances, bull riding, and regional music. The protagonists of Jaripeo dismantle archetypes of queerness, masculinity, and femininity, highlighting the sensuality and exhilaration of the rodeos. The film celebrates the naturalness, joy, and acceptance of queer life within this traditional Mexican world, emphasizing that the ideal is for all to live freely in their own skin.
