Cole is a true Seattle legend: In his 25-year tenure at KEXP, he helped define not just who Seattle listens to, but how we listen, fostering delight and curiosity with every recommendation.
Peter Hilgendorf and Andrew Franks' new bio-doc about Cole, RADIOHEART, is a rollercoaster ride through half a century of alternative music. The film covers Cole's stints in the Minneapolis disco scene in the '70s, "Revolution Radio" in the '90s, and Amazon Music in the early 2000s. Cole's life is peppered with cameos from musical greats; Prince even hired Cole as his personal DJ.
Peeling back the curtain on the freewheeling rock and roll era, Cole humbly recounts how he battled addiction and pulled himself from the brink. Such experiences later inspired Cole to create the "Music Heals" series on KEXP exploring the intersection of mental health and music.
Boasting a killer soundtrack and a wealth of nostalgic archival footage, RADIOHEART is a paean to Seattle's vibrant music scene, a manifesto for the personalized recommendation in the streaming era, and a portrait of the city's most infectious music fan.
