This coming-of-age story follows an unusual 11-year-old girl, in 1980s Tokyo, whose intelligent father is dying of cancer and mother at her wits' end. It's another fine movie by Japanese female director Chie Hayakawa, who trained in New York, and whose previous film, about euthanasia (Plan 75), won an award at Cannes Film Festival in 2022 and was presented at SIFF a few years ago. The tomboyish/courageous girl Fuki (Yui Suzuki in her debut role) has an interest in the paranormal and tries out hypnosis and card tricks on her friends and family. Here is lovely writing and direction - a lot of seemingly small stuff happens, such as imitating a horse call, impersonating a young woman to meet with a man whom she contacted on the phone, and learning about the painter Renoir. But there is much intellectual development going on in Fuki's brain. Without complaint or antics, she grows through difficulties such as the death of her dear father and contemplates the effect of death on society.
