In a remote village in eastern Turkey, a village has been divided in two by a decades-old land feud. The Hazerans inhabit the upper village; the Bezaris lived in the lower village, before being driven into exile. Upon their return, a rumor arises that the Bezaris intend to steal the Hazerans' land. While the Hazerans' leader, Sheikh Ferit, advocates for calm, compromise, and coexistence, his troubled brother, Mesut, takes a different approach.
Beset by nightmares that he interprets as visions, Mesut convinces the Hazerans that salvation for one side can only be achieved through the eradication of the other. The people respond with enthusiasm, fueled by a sense of grievance and righteous indignation, and keen to see themselves as principled defenders of their own land, rather than the usurpers of their neighbors'.
While the story of the film is based on actual events, director Emin Alper blurs dream sequences and reality and combines realism with a highly stylized aesthetic to conjure a timeless tale with no shortage of resonance today.
Winner of the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival.
