Comedy and tragedy are at opposite ends of the emotional spectrum, but they're still closely related, as can be seen in Jay Duplass' finely balanced depiction of a family reacting to the shocking suicide of Leah, their youngest family member. We first meet Leah's comedy podcaster brother, Aaron (Cooper Raiff), two months after her death as his life is spinning out of control. He resists taking his court-ordered therapy sessions seriously and ghosts his girlfriend without explanation. Glimpses of Leah (Caitlyn Dever) are seen in Aaron's dream-like flashbacks, providing hints about what led to her tragic decision. Though the family's pain is mostly filtered through Aaron's eyes, the film is a true ensemble—featuring standout performances by Hope Davis and David Duchovny, playing grieving parents who hide their emotions and health concerns behind a façade of normalcy, as well as Lucy Boynton, playing Leah's older sister, Emily, who juggles her sadness while raising her young child and obsessing over funeral plans. Stand-up comedian Adam Clayton-Holland adapted the screenplay from his memoir about the real-life suicide of his own sister, giving the film a sense of lived-in emotion and the promise of redemption through therapy.
