Sikkimese filmmaker Tribeny Rai makes a striking feature debut with Shape of Momo, a Nepali-language drama in which Bishnu (Gaumaya Gurung) quits her job in Delhi and heads back to her mountain village. Back home, she is surrounded by three generations of women in her family: a grandmother waiting for her son in Dubai to take her away, a mother who endures without question, and a pregnant sister in flight from her marriage. The shape of a momo becomes a symbol for the unrealistic standards placed on women, standards that go unquestioned. Bishnu is determined to challenge the patriarchal mindset calcified around her, but nothing gives easily. A brief romance with local architect Giyan only complicates things further. Rai captures the camaraderie and warmth between these women despite their differences. Archana Ghangrekar's cinematography renders the Himalayan setting with a dual register: beautiful on the surface, quietly oppressive beneath it. Ultimately, Shape of Momo understands that the desire to change things for the people closest to us is rarely as simple as it seems.
