Following her acclaimed Girl Picture (SIFF, 2022), director Alli Haapasalo takes the female body's built-in violence and imbues that bottled up fury into 19th-century Finland on a little island called Seili. Amanda (Marketta Tikkanen), a woman living with PMDD, is dismissed as hysterical and sent to the island. The world of Seili is built upon hundreds of true stories from its original text by Katja Kallio. Haapasalo adapts the novel with care, crafting a specific world attuned to all its characters. Resisting easy villains, the story reveals structural cruelty instead of leaning on the cliché of a sadistic nurse. Lush, almost paradisiacal greenery masks the suppression of women; a moment shows Amanda primal screaming, her cries disappearing through the branches of towering trees. Spectres of her past conveyed through elegant—now soiled—gowns, and stories of Paris, remind viewers of what was stolen from Amanda. This period piece hits close to home, illuminating how misogyny has always run rampant in healthcare systems, oppressing and silencing women until we don't feel real enough to fight for ourselves.
