The Mondial du Fromage in Tours, France, is a competition not for cheesemakers, but for cheesemongers—experts in the presentation and curation of cheese, just as a sommelier differs from a winemaker. Sara Joe Wolansky's doc follows the 2023 competition and its American qualifying leg, Cheesemongers International, whose organizer, guru, and tireless booster is the intense but irreverent Adam Moskowitz. Bounding onstage in a cow-patterned onesie to launch his CMI by leading competitors from across the U.S. (including Courtney and Jordan from Seattle) in a mantra of "mooooo," he becomes our guide, accompanying, coaching, and spurring on the American winners as they invade the mecca of cheese and challenge the keepers (and don't they know it) of the sacred flame. His ultimate goal is to get the culinary world to take seriously cheesemongers from the land of Velveeta and Kraft American Singles, and the path involves evaluations of public speaking, constructing a cheese display, and a fiercely intimidating taste test that goes far beyond telling a bleu from a brie; contestants practically have to name the color of the cow the milk came from.
