After years together, Marta (Alba Rohrwacher) and Antonio (Elio Germano) are no strangers to the kind of small argument that never amounts to much, which makes it all the more surprising that a trivial argument leads to their undoing. A chef on the rise, Antonio throws himself into work at his restaurant. Meanwhile, Marta spends her evenings spreading ketchup on crackers for dinner and bickering with a life-size cardboard cutout of a K-pop star she rescued from a dumpster. When Marta learns that her loss of appetite is about more than heartbreak, everything changes: the taste of food, the sound of music, the experience of desire, and the certainty she felt around long settled choices.

Acclaimed Spanish writer-director Isabel Coixet (Un Amor, SIFF 2024; The Bookshop, SIFF 2018) adapts Michela Murgia's best-selling semi-autobiographical novel into a film that could easily have become a standard-issue terminal illness drama but instead opens into something far more interesting: a portrait of a woman taking stock of who she is, what she wants, and what she can still become. Shot on warm 35mm, Three Goodbyes shows us Rome the way you can only see a city once you have been forced to accept that your time in it may be finite.
