Set in the remote highlands of Montenegro on the Sinjajevina plateau, Gara lives with her 13-year-old niece, Nada, whom she has raised since childhood. As a traditional, semi-nomadic shepherd and cheese maker, Gara is locked in a fierce battle to protect their ancestral grazing land from being converted into a NATO military training ground. Intrepid and unwavering, Gara leads this charge, fueled by her love for the land.

Intricately linked to this struggle is the family's history of violence, as they confront the impending release of the man who murdered Nada's biological mother. As tensions rise within their community and family, Nada and Gara must navigate the challenges of environmental and political encroachment, relying on each other for safety and solace. Nada is coming of age and discovering her own independent path, while Gara, who doesn't always know what a teenager needs, strives to understand her.

This gripping and insightful documentary, winner of the World Documentary Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival, offers a sensitive exploration of family, environmental activism, and resilience against domestic violence and militarization. To Hold a Mountain profoundly resonates in today's world, showcasing the enduring power of love and resistance.
