SEATTLE -- August 26, 2014 -- On September 18 - 21, SIFF's annual celebration, Women in Cinema, returns, showcasing exceptional films made by women from around the world. The four-day event will feature 12 exciting features and documentaries. Five special guests, including directors and producers, will join us to discuss their films in post-screening Q&As. Opening Night takes place at the soon-to-be-opened SIFF Cinema Egyptian, and features Seattle favorite Lynn Shelton's new film Laggies, starring Keira Knightly. An after-party will be held at nearby Capitol Cider.
"It's another exciting year of exceptional work from women filmmakers," says Carl Spence, SIFF Artistic Director. "I'm particularly excited to bring Laggies and Lynn Shelton to the SIFF Cinema Egyptian. We're very excited to meet our new neighbors for this special, one-night-only event at the theatre before we open in October."
The festival continues with Danish master Pernille Christensen's award-winning Someone You Love; stunning foreign Oscar® submissions from Norway (I Am Yours) and the Philippines (Transit); and enlightening new documentaries from Jessica Yu (Misconception), Winter's Bone director Debra Granik (Stray Dog), and Tina Mascara and Guido Santi (Monk with a Camera). A screening of NFFTY (National Film Festival for Talented Youth) shorts will also be presented, as well as an eye-opening panel presented by Women in Film on how groundbreaking female filmmakers are eschewing traditional methodologies to get their films made. All of these films and the panel will be held at SIFF Cinema Uptown.
"Every year, I've seen the Women in Cinema festival continue to grow in relevance and in astonishing works from incredible filmmakers," says Beth Barrett, SIFF Director of Programming. "Sharing these unique voices and getting these stories heard -- and provoking the conversation about how to continue to keep cinema vibrant and diverse -- is why we do this."
