Wajda’s striking feature debut, set in 1942 on the outskirts of occupied Warsaw, centers on Stach, a teen who witnesses his friend murdered by a Nazi and subsequently joins a left-wing resistance cell. The mixture of Italian neorealism and atmospheric dread established Wajda as a director to watch, as well as foregrounding key recurring themes in his work – honour, courage and sacrifice. The first in Wajda’s acclaimed war trilogy, this landmark film helped change the trajectory of Polish cinema with its stark account of wartime tragedies and coming of age during a time of unbelievable loss.
