In the final stages of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, a unit of Polish Home Army resistance fighters attempt to escape the Nazi aggressors through a hellish descent through the labyrinthian city sewers. Jerzy Lipman's claustrophobic, high contrast cinematography conveys their nightmarish struggle along the road to freedom. Based on true events, the film brought Wajda international acclaim for its evocative portrait of strength, duty and hope in the face of insurmountable odds.
