In 1990 Nicholas Pileggi’s book "Wiseguy" inspired Scorsese’s GoodFellas, and the two wrote its screenplay together. For Casino they wrote a brash swaggering epic of mid-century Las Vegas, when high-level crime and legitimate business contended for control. Amidst a sea of excessive consumption, Ace Rothstein (Robert De Niro) runs his Tangiers gambling establishment with cool-headed professionalism, everything in its place, like the money he skims off the nightly take. Scorsese sees the setup as a “paradise threatened by pride and greed.” The Mob wants in, and Ace’s enforcer Nicky (Joe Pesci), always pursuing hot-headed schemes, does not inspire confidence. Between the two, in a darkly dynamic way, is Ace’s captivating wife Ginger (Sharon Stone), who’s still tied to her former boyfriend Lester (James Woods). In addition to its human drama, Casino is a juicy parade of 1970s design and gaudy style, and a mesmerizing expose of how Vegas coins became entries in Midwestern businessmen’s bank books. A key motif: lots and lots of money-counting. The Oscar-nominated Stone has never been better; she energizes and centers the film, and will not be denied. Scorsese’s idol Micheal Powell, the legendary British director who made The Red Shoes, felt that cinema was a kind of music, and Casino’s rhythmic flow of images, emotions, sounds and songs, seconds that motion.
