Martin Scorsese: Maestro of Cinema

Three mobsters (Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci) play by Mob rules, enjoying money, prestige, wine women and song “like a rollicking road movie.” But they misstep, triggering a delirious climactic fall from grace. One of the greatest of all films.

When the Sicilian police broke up the Mafia in the 1990s, the mobster second in command said GoodFellas was the one film that accurately portrayed their lifestyle. For Scorsese the film shows “the dangerous seduction of that lifestyle,” the way you get money, glamorous prestige, wine women, and song “like a rollicking road movie,” but then "things go wrong in a big way.” The film chronicles the rise and fall of real-life mobster Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), and his pals Jimmy (Robert De Niro) and Tommy (Joe Pesci), who careen through the world their way, conventional norms and laws be damned. They can rub out a guy and eat a big meal in the same hour. But Mafia codes and loyalties rule: after whacking a made man, the trio rightly perceives danger around every corner. A funny moment can turn fearsome; a big-money high-stakes heist, drug use, family squabbles (Hill and his wife [Lorraine Bracco]) fragment the world in a feverish rush, brilliantly thrust at us by Scorsese’s relentless camera and Schoonmaker’s crashing editing. Truly a film for the ages.
