In this adaptation of Edith Wharton’s novel, 1870s New York society shapes and controls lives. The breadth and depth of Scorsese’s sensibility is on sumptuous display as he flows from GoodFellas' 1970s New York Mob land to 1870s high society, where strict social codes also shape and control lives. Adapted from Edith Wharton’s novel, the film centers on lawyer Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis), who’s about to marry a sweet, unsophisticated socialite (Winona Ryder), when her cousin Ellen Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer) returns from abroad. Newland, smitten by this brilliant, cultured woman, soon realizes that he’s found his soulmate, but their romantic fervor must find clandestine expression. Scorsese has the artistic wisdom to “say a little in certain emotional situations and mean a lot.” A beautiful love is expressed in textures and gestures “like brushstrokes, the sensuality of painting, the sending of flowers.” A glove unbuttoned on a carriage ride is a moment of high eroticism. Joanne Woodward, as Edith Wharton’s intimate voice, narrates this mesmerizing tale of passion and sacrifice.
