This New Wave-style bitter-sweet romance took the world by storm, playing for a year and a half straight in Seattle. Persistence of emotional pain vies with the prospect of future happiness for an adult woman and man. Anne (Anouk Aimee, stunning and mysterious) works in the film industry and mourns her dead husband (Pierre: Pierre Barouh), killed in an accident. Jean-Louis (Jean-Louis Trintignant), a race car driver, lost his wife (Valérie Lagrange) to suicide. Chance brings Anne and Jean-Louis into proximity: her daughter and his son attend the same boarding school North in Deauville. There’s a spark between them, but what can come of it; they’re both in love with those who’ve departed. Writer-Director Lelouch engages us in Anne’s and Jean-Louis’ separate lives, thrillingly as he drives in the Le Mans and the Monte Carlo Rally races (Trintignant’s uncle won many races; for car aficionados: the film features Ford GT40s, early Mustangs). For Anne, her lost Pierre remains a felt presence, but she and Jean-Louis drive together in all weathers. They met by chance, and chance generates more suspense: are they really made for each other? Anouk Aimee is one of the screen’s enigmatic beauties, and Lelouch knows to enshrine her face: “It is women’s faces that speak.” What does she say?
