Jules and Jim is based on a traditional source novel that chronicles pre-World War I Belle-Époque Paris life, but the film displays the vivacious, liberated New Wave spirit in theme and style. Two friends, the shy Austrian Jules (Oscar Werner) and the bohemian Frenchman Jim (Henri Serre) are fascinated by a female statue with a mysterious smile, and they meet a woman (Catherine: Jeanne Moreau) who is almost magically the ideal of both men. Catherine is happy to bask in their attention, to be their guiding star, but on her own terms. Truffaut’s camera is in ecstatic motion, pulsing with the quick of Catherine’s life-force, trying to capture her flickering expressions and moods. She’s open, secretive, calm, passionate, creative, destructive at any given moment, all in expression of her one absolute: personal freedom. The deep friendship and love between Jules and Jim and Catherine comprises one of the cinema’s most famous love triangles, as its members come together, and part, and repeat, through World War I and many skirmishes of the heart. Delight, suffering, laughter; profound truths conveyed through Truffaut’s humane, light touch and Jeanne Moreau’s iconic stature. As she says, “I was who I was at that time, my needs coincided with the needs of film directors and the preoccupations of the time: Who is a woman? Who is she?”
