I exist. What is my essence? What do I choose? Eric Rohmer, one of the founding New Wave figures, liked to stroll the streets of Paris. Even if he had a planned destination, he was open to the music of chance. Rohmer’s characters are solidly self-directed, but they can be surprised by life. In a provincial town, Jean Louis (Jean-Louis Trintignant) believes he’ll meet his dream woman and marry her, and he spots college student Françoise (Marie-Christine Barrault) in church. He’s determined that she will be the one, but he hasn’t even met her. Unplanned things happen: Jean-Louis runs into his old friend Vidal (Antoine Vitez), who suggests that they visit his friend Maud (Françoise Fabian), one of the most liberated New Wave heroines, who has broken many traditional barriers (she’s an accomplished physician, highly cultured, and a loving single parent). The three stay up late, drinking and discussing freedom of choice. Vidal leaves, it’s snowing heavily, why not have Jean-Louis stay the night? There’s one bed; Maud sleeps naked. Rohmer’s cinema explores forward motion and hesitation, the nature of things, and cosmic grace. New Wave women show the way.
