As one of his film titles says, François Truffaut is The Man Who Loved Women. He reveres female beauty, intelligence, spirit, wit, and “superior understanding of emotions.” In his films, “Are women magic?” is a recurrent theme. In Truffaut’s Jules and Jim, two men initially see Jeanne Moreau’s Catherine as a statue come to life, but they soon experience her full human complexity. In Stolen Kisses, Truffaut’s cinematic alter-ego, Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Léaud), a romantic who’s endearingly hapless, gains access to the hearts of Paris by taking a detective job. His touching and comic personal private investigations are the most revealing. He’s had a fluctuating romance with violinist Christine (Claude Jade): they never want each other at the same time, but both are still in the game. Antoine is hired by businessman Tabard (Michel Lonsdale) to discover why no one likes him, and is instantly smitten by the man’s elegant wife Fabienne (Delphine Seyrig, a classic New Wave woman). Following the French tradition of an older women giving a younger man his emotional education, she tells the starry-eyed Antoine, “I am not an apparition. I am a woman, unique and irreplaceable.” Meanwhile, young Christine learns that in order to get what you want in life, sometimes you have to give a push.
