We conclude our world-ranging romp across the permeable barrier of life and death with the greatest of all coming-of-age films, an oddity of epic proportions in a mere one-and-a-quarter hours! Perfection! A dream-like verisimilitude, adapted from Vitězslav Nezval’s 1930s novel-of-the-same-name by the multi-talented Ester Krumbachová (who was additionally the production designer on the film). Things are changing for Valerie, inside and out. Are these changes normal? Abnormal? Is she under the influence of witchcraft? Seduced by vampirism? Who is to say? Yet it needs saying and seeing, for all of its gothic beauty! Living? Undead, undead, undead! Then, fully alive!
