Elaine, a beautiful young witch, is determined to find a man to love her. In her gothic Victorian apartment she makes spells and potions, and then picks up men and seduces them. However, her spells work too well, leaving her with a string of hapless victims. When she finally meets the man of her dreams, her desperation to be loved will drive her to the brink of insanity and murder.
"The fear of female sexuality has been a staple of horror movies forever, but “The Love Witch” does more than simply subvert or parody the erotic underpinnings of the genre. The deliberately stilted acting and the baroque artificiality of the settings — a potpourri of New Age, Victoriana, midcentury American Square and Renaissance Faire hippie — bespeak a high degree of self-consciousness, but it would be a mistake to view the movie simply as a spoof or a goof. Its humor is too subtle and strange for that, and the emotions that ground the story are too strong and complicated. The tale itself often drifts away from the suspense-driven logic of conventional horror into realms of gauzy romance, surreal grotesquerie and demented trippiness." — A.O. Scott, The New York Times
