Can a man change, or will the bruises from his past spoil the barrel of (so-called) civilized apples? In the second of five western collaborations with the tragic existentialist Anthony Mann, James Stewart plays Glyn McLyntock, a reformed border raider guiding an Oregon bound wagon train in 1866. The homesteader’s folksy journey down the Columbia River and sentimental settling are soon disrupted when promised supplies fail to arrive at summer’s end. Learning their provisions were confiscated by the rush of gold-mad capitalists in Portland, McLyntock quickly finds himself intervening in a shootout alongside former thief Emerson Cole (Arthur Kennedy) and professional gambler Trey Wilson (Rock Hudson). Throughout, the action spirals around the sublimely commanding Mount Hood, that “tall fella with the white hair” whose omnipresence presides over a rugged landscape of perilous opportunity and opportunistic miners. Full of literary digressions and adventurous location photography, Anthony Mann depicts a creeping moral reckoning that invades the pretense of the northwest frontier’s greatness and glory.
“Mann crafts a narrative that begins in the familiar territory of community-building and settlement but evolves into something far more troubling: an examination of how quickly civilized veneer can crack under pressure.”—MOMA
