Though The Witch and Midsommar are set in vastly different times, their female protagonists operate within the same patriarchal structures and struggle to break free of them, ultimately reaching a point of transformation and freedom. Join horror fanatic Amie Simon as she dissects the ways in which Thomasin and Dani’s journeys diverge, and how each one emerges from a horrific experience as a true Queen.

ABOUT WHAT THE FEMME

What The Femme is a SIFF Education series exploring women character archetypes in cinema through analyzing the roles of women in horror, science fiction, and fantasy films. Each session will explore one character or archetype through several primary films, though likely more may be referenced. This education extension of SIFF's WTF Festival programming is curated by Colleen O'Holleran.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Amie Simon grew up loving scary movies — the more splatter, the better. She loves everything from the bright-orange paint-y blood of Hammer Horror, to Wes Craven’s roller coaster of good & bad, Italian overdubs and so! much! more! She also feels VERY strongly about Bryan Fuller's "Hannibal" series being the best adaptation of all time.
